Most people keep their wallet in their back pocket. It is usually fine, but if you sit on it for 8 hours straight at work, the wallet will start to wear a hole in your pants.  Also, sitting on a wallet means you won’t be sitting up straight and your back will start hurting after doing this for a couple of months.

If you boss asks you to go off property for lunch or to have drinks after work, you should always go.  It is not just that he wants to hang out – he usually has some alternate agenda, like discussing your future with the company or has some advice for you that would be a little inappropriate to tell you at work.  Your relationship with your boss is the most important part of getting ahead of your career.  If you turn him down once, he probably won’t be asking again.

You boss is going to tell you he needs a report by Friday.  Don’t wait until the last minute, stay late and finish the report and give it to him on Thursday.  It will really help you boss out and once he goes through it, he might have a few changes to make before he needs to use it.  He will view you as dependable, hardworking and part of the team.

Life Before Noon Tip: Bring Work Home When Possible

Posted on July 27th, 2010 by Dan

If your boss gives you an assignment that can easily be worked on at home, be sure to do just that.  You don’t have to waste the entire weekend and spend 40 of your 48 hours on the assignment, but you can spend a couple hours making some progress.  It will make things easier on Monday plus your superiors will take notice to the extra effort.  It will be easier to put in extra work earlier in your career because you will probably have less responsibility at home and more time to get ahead at the office

Life Before Noon Tip: Eat Something Before Work

Posted on July 27th, 2010 by David

When you are running out the door to go to work, be sure to grab something to eat.  A banana, a granola bar, a piece of bread, chocolate, anything is better than nothing.  In the business world, you don’t know what meeting you’re going to be pulled in to or what urgent project is going to get thrown on your desk. Many times, you are going to have to skip lunch to get the work done.  It will happen more often than you think.

Life Before Noon Tip: Know Your Co-Workers Names

Posted on July 8th, 2010 by David

How many times have you seen someone from work at a bar or ballgame and not gone to talk to them because you didn’t know there name.  Remembering someone’s name is an easy way to show appreciation and gain trust.  It puts people at ease and makes them know that their hard work is paying off.  Little things like this will go a long way in developing and maintaining professional relationships.

You’re going to be thirsty during the day and water is the best thing for you.  Soda is going to be plentiful as is coffee.  Anything in moderation is fine, but some are better than others.  Water will quench hunger, hydrate you and help flush you out.  Drinking as much water as possible during the day will also help keep you hydrated at the bar that night (keep drinking water in between beers at the bar, but when you do, just slam the glass of water and get back to drinking beer. Don’t sip it like an English lad sips Pellegrino).

Unless you are planning the event or know someone who works at the bar, don’t be the first person in the group to show up at a happy hour.  It will look like you are such a loser that this happy hour is the highlight of your week and you were so eager for it that you wanted to be sure to get there first.  Being the last to leave is much more acceptable than being the first to arrive.  If you are the last one to leave, it generally means that you met some new people, hopefully women, and are enjoying their company.

Whatever line of work you enter into be sure to buy comfortable shoes.  Don’t try to pass sneakers as dress shoes, but you also don’t need to buy $500 dress shoes.  Find a pair of shoes that look dressy and can be worn all day.  Nothing is worse than achy feet by 2pm.  Also, make sure that they are easy to put on and take off, that means no laces!  To find some options, go to www.zappos.com can search for men’s career shoes.  Having no laces will make things easier in the morning and will be convenient when you are flying to a meeting and have to remove them at the security checkpoint.

If your work allows you to leave at lunch, run your errands (bank, dry cleaners, post office, home depot, CVS, etc…) during your lunch break and grab a quick snack to eat in the car on your way back.  This will save you time after work and allow you to concentrate on better things.   Just don’t do something crazy like schedule massage or a haircut during your lunch break, you boss will think you are slacking off and not concentrating on your work.
