If you, your dad or your brother is about to throw out an old, electric shaver, grab it and throw it in your glove box.  Some days you are going to be running so late for work that you won’t have a chance to shave.  The five minutes you save by shaving in the car might be the difference between being on time or being your boss’s office for a talk. You probably don’t want to make a habit out of it, but if you’re in a jam it will get the job done.

If you want to look professional at work, don’t wear the black plastic Seiko Watch anymore.  Buy something that looks classy but is not expensive. Marc Ecko has some good choices under $100. When choosing a watch, don’t get one with much “bling”. You know what we mean:  no fake diamonds.  People will know it is a fake, especially with your salary. You don’t want people questioning  your integrity.  Once you do invest more than $20 in a watch, be sure to take care of it.  Also, you don’t need to buy multiple watches, your hard earned money is better spent on other things (like beer).   Get one watch you like and stick with it.

Keep an old button up shirt and a pair of slacks that you don’t wear anymore in the truck of your car in case your spill coffee or food on yourself on the way to work. It is very embarrassing to have to walk around all day with a stain on your clothes.  Also, keep a clean undershirt in case it has been a long day and everyone wants to go out to work afterwards.  No one will want to belly-up at the bar next to you if you smell.

Keep an extra belt, preferably black and brown reversible, in your trunk.  While you will never leave your home without a shirt, pants, socks or shoes, there will be days you are rushing out and you will forget your belt.  It is great to have a back up just in case and it sure beats stopping by Wal-Mart on the way to work to buy another one.

Life Before Noon Tip: Laundry

Posted on June 30th, 2010 by David

Two basic suits will get you through all of your interviews.  If you don’t need to wear a suit to work, those same two suits will last you even longer because you will probably only wear them three to five times a year…combined.  One important mistake to avoid, which I know through experience, is that suits are dry-clean only.  I ruined a perfectly good suit one time by throwing the suit pants in the wash with my other laundry.

Now that you are growing up you will be buying nicer clothes on occassion.  Pay attention to the washing instructions before attempting to clean them.  It is no big deal to throw your “Drunk Chicks Dig Me” tee shirt in the laundry without thinking, but it will wreck your day if a suit or $75 shirt is ruined because you were careless.

Life Before Noon Tip: Take A Vitamin

Posted on June 29th, 2010 by David

Remember, you are a big boy now.  Don’t try to be cool and think vitamins are for chumps.  Not only do vitamins help you be healthy, but they also help you out with energy.  Do you know what the big ingredient is of Red Bull and 5-Hour Energy? B-vitamins.  B-vitamins boost you energy big time.

Now, if you had a normal healthy diet, you don’t need vitamins.  But, since you eat pizza for 4 meals a week, taco bell for 3 and fries are your only vegetable, vitamins are essential for you.  So, swallow your pride and take a multi-vitamin every morning.  We guarantee, you will feel better all day long.

Whatever line of work you enter into be sure to buy comfortable shoes.  Don’t try to pass sneakers as dress shoes, but you also don’t need to buy $500 dress shoes.  Find a pair of shoes that look dressy and can be worn all day.  Nothing is worse than achy feet by 2pm.  Also, make sure that they are easy to put on and take off, that means no laces!  To find some options, go to www.zappos.com can search for men’s career shoes.  Having no laces will make things easier in the morning and will be convenient when you are flying to a meeting and have to remove them at the security checkpoint.

No one is ever going to notice your socks…unless you have on two that don’t match.  Don’t worry about different style socks.  Instead, load up on the same exact style.  This way you won’t have to worry about trying to match up socks in the morning and, more importantly, you won’t show up to work wearing two different socks.  Eliminate choices and save time by making things easy!

If your work allows you to leave at lunch, run your errands (bank, dry cleaners, post office, home depot, CVS, etc…) during your lunch break and grab a quick snack to eat in the car on your way back.  This will save you time after work and allow you to concentrate on better things.   Just don’t do something crazy like schedule massage or a haircut during your lunch break, you boss will think you are slacking off and not concentrating on your work.
