There Is Life Before Noon

Posted on August 23rd, 2010 by Dan

College is a phase of life that you eventually have to leave but that doesn’t mean you have to grow out of it.  You learned way too much in college to not take something with you and apply it everyday in and out of work.  Once you realize that “life after college” does not have to be different from “life in college,” you can concentrate on more important thinks like securing a job.  The first step in being successful in life after college is accepting that there is life before noon and you must be part of it.

If you, your dad or your brother is about to throw out an old, electric shaver, grab it and throw it in your glove box.  Some days you are going to be running so late for work that you won’t have a chance to shave.  The five minutes you save by shaving in the car might be the difference between being on time or being your boss’s office for a talk. You probably don’t want to make a habit out of it, but if you’re in a jam it will get the job done.

If you want to look professional at work, don’t wear the black plastic Seiko Watch anymore.  Buy something that looks classy but is not expensive. Marc Ecko has some good choices under $100. When choosing a watch, don’t get one with much “bling”. You know what we mean:  no fake diamonds.  People will know it is a fake, especially with your salary. You don’t want people questioning  your integrity.  Once you do invest more than $20 in a watch, be sure to take care of it.  Also, you don’t need to buy multiple watches, your hard earned money is better spent on other things (like beer).   Get one watch you like and stick with it.

Keep an old button up shirt and a pair of slacks that you don’t wear anymore in the truck of your car in case your spill coffee or food on yourself on the way to work. It is very embarrassing to have to walk around all day with a stain on your clothes.  Also, keep a clean undershirt in case it has been a long day and everyone wants to go out to work afterwards.  No one will want to belly-up at the bar next to you if you smell.

Life Before Noon Tip: Drinking By Yourself is Fine

Posted on August 17th, 2010 by Dan

Growing up, you always hear that if you drink when you are alone, you have a drinking problem.  Trust us, if you have a couple of beers when you get home, you are fine; you don’t have a problem.  Drinking beer is one of man’s best pleasures in life, so you should partake even if you are by yourself.  Now, if you are doing shots by yourself until you puke, then waking up and slamming Jack straight out of the bottle with a straw so you don’t shake, then you have a problem.

Keep an extra belt, preferably black and brown reversible, in your trunk.  While you will never leave your home without a shirt, pants, socks or shoes, there will be days you are rushing out and you will forget your belt.  It is great to have a back up just in case and it sure beats stopping by Wal-Mart on the way to work to buy another one.

Life Before Noon Tip: Fill’er Up When You Can

Posted on August 15th, 2010 by David

Put gas in your car at lunch time or on the way home from work.  Whenever you try to gas up on the way to work in the morning there will be some other variable, like traffic, that will result in you being late to work.  In addition, you don’t have to wait until your gas tank is on empty before you put more gas in.  Anytime you are at the gas station buying beer, fill up the tank.  It will save you the misery of running out of  gas.

You don’t have to have designer clothes to look good.  All you need to do is make sure of three things:

  • Your clothes fit you, not too tight, not too baggy
  • Your clothes are in good shape, no holes or missing buttons
  • Your clothes are not wrinkled.  Buy wrinkle free and invest in a steamer. (Ironing sucks)

When you hang up your dress shirts, the quickest and easiest method is just buttoning the top button.  There are two problems with only buttoning the top button.  The first problem is that a wrinkle will appear on both sides of the shirt if you leave it hanging for too long. The second problem is that the collar of the shirt will get all worn and the top button area will start to fold down.   It ruins the shirt and you won’t be able to wear a tie with the shirt when the button is folded over.  So, the best way to hang a shirt if to button all the buttons, but if that seems like overkill, at least be sure to button the second and third button also.

Most people keep their wallet in their back pocket. It is usually fine, but if you sit on it for 8 hours straight at work, the wallet will start to wear a hole in your pants.  Also, sitting on a wallet means you won’t be sitting up straight and your back will start hurting after doing this for a couple of months.
